Two bowls of split pleas soup, eh.

I've said that line probably twenty times in the past 24 hours as I made this soup, and it's probably only funny to my mom and brother, or anyone else who has watched Strange Brew as much as we have.  And let me tell you, THAT'S A LOT.  It's funny to me each and every time, but I bet the members of my family are looking forward to the next meal I make more than ever before - if for no other reason than I'll stop saying it.  Back to the soup.

I've always flat out avoided Split Pea Soup.  I don't think it looks good, sometimes it doesn't smell good, and if there's a choice of anything else to eat, I'll take it.  A few weeks ago I tried it for the first time, and it was not as bad as I'd imagined.  Plus, for both Marty and my dad, it's their all-time favorite soup.  So out of love and a desire to prove to myself that I could enjoy a bowl, I made Split Pea Soup yesterday.  And liked it.

I started with a Betty Crocker version and made a few small changes to the recipe.  The biggest change is that the soup requires a few steps with time to let it sit or cook between each.  I knew I would be in and out of the house yesterday, so made changes to the recipe based on when I'd be here.  I think it turned out to be pretty tasty, although next time I may see if I can reduce the steps even further.  My dad said it was "world class", and Marty said it was "as good as Grandma Harriette's" - and in their own terms, they mean the exact same thing.
